Now that Susan G. Komen for the Cure® has been revealed as a far-right organization that places Republican political priorities ahead of women’s health, what can you do about breast cancer? Here are some alternatives.
First, educate yourself about breast cancer. Some places to start:
Second, direct your time and money to organizations fighting for breast health:
Planned Parenthood: www.plannedparenthood.org
Planned Parenthood and the patients it cares for are the ones most impacted by Komen’s conservative agenda. You can help make up for Komen’s repudiation of Planned Parenthood by donating directly to Planned Parenthood instead. In many areas, Planned Parenthood is the only organization providing breast health services to poor and low-income women.
National Breast Cancer Coalition: www.breastcancerdeadline2020.org
“NBCC has grown to include hundreds of organizations, representing several million patients, professionals, women, their families and friends. Coalition members include cancer support, information and service groups, as well as women’s health and provider organizations.” NBCC received a rating of “A” from the American Institute of Philanthropy.
Breast Cancer Research Foundation: www.bcrfcure.org
“Our mission is to achieve prevention and a cure for breast cancer in our lifetime by providing critical funding for innovative clinical and translational research at leading medical centers worldwide, and increasing public awareness about good breast health. Currently, over 90 cents of every dollar donated goes to research and awareness programs.” BCRF received an “A+” rating from the American Institute of Philanthropy.
Third, you don’t have to trash all your pink ribbon swag. In the United States, the pink ribbon is in the public domain, and anybody can use it. It’s only the “running ribbon” that is trademarked by Susan G. Komen.
