“I do have crazy eyes” – A tribute to Chad.

“Malcolm in the Middle” is one of my favorite television shows, and Dewey’s classmate Chad is one of my favorite characters on the show. Chad is an emotionally disturbed child with a compulsion to organize — “Big books go on the bottom shelf”; “Pictures of things belong on the things they’re pictures of” — and a tendency to lash out violently at anybody who annoys him, or just gets too close. Chad’s stressed and desperate parents always dress him in oven mitts and tape warning signs to his shirt to try to head off some of the problems that are likely to arise. Played by Cameron Monaghan, Chad appears in only six out of 151 episodes — once in Season Five, and the rest in Season Six, but still manages to be one of the most memorable characters on the show. I’ve gathered what I believe to be a complete collection of Chad’s signs, as well as a few of his better lines.

“Malcolm in the Middle” was produced by Satin City, Regency Television, and Fox Television Studios, one of more of whom, I assume, own the rights to these images. I hope the low resolution and limited selection will persuade them to indulge me.

Season 5, Episode 18: Dewey’s Special Class

In Chad’s first appearance, he asks Dewey to scratch his nose. When Dewey asks about the sign on Chad’s chest, Chad assures him that it’s okay to ignore the sign. Unfortunately, Dewey hasn’t seen the sign on Chad’s back.

Season 6, Episode 2: Buseys Run Away

After Dewey is placed back in a mainstream classroom, his classmates decide to run away. They spend most of the episode living in a tree in Dewey’s yard. Chad begins the episode with one of his parents’ signs, but during the escapade he makes his own signs, which, having discarded his sweatshirt, he tapes to his bare chest.

In this episode, Chad sees his own picture on a milk carton and comments, “Mom’s right: I do have crazy eyes.”

Chad’s best lines from this episode:

“Stop screaming at me! You’re not my guidance counselor!”

“We used to be a team: you two and the four of me.”

Season 6, Episode 11: Dewey’s Opera

Dewey writes an opera based on his own parents. Chad plays the part of Jamie in the opera, and also makes a plot suggestion (which Dewey doesn’t follow): “What if Don Argento solves his romantic problems with a machete, in a tragic but comedic big, bloody mess?”

Chad’s best line in this, his last appearance on the show, is “This is my favorite time of day. The sun’s about to come up, and my mean voice is still asleep.”

To date, Fox has only released Season 1 of “Malcolm in the Middle” on DVD. I keep hoping for the rest; especially Season 6. Cameron Monaghan, all grown up now, has worked steadily since “Malcolm” went off the air, and now plays Ian Gallagher on the Showtime series “Shameless.” But I hope none of us ever forget Chad.
