Reading the comments.

I’m in the habit of reading the comments following online news stories. I think I need to stop. Reading the comments makes me wonder whether there’s any hope at all for the future. The rampant stupidity of the general public, as expressed in the comments, is enough to make you give up.

I’d like to think that most people aren’t really so desperately stupid. Maybe stupid people are overrepresented in comments on news stories. Maybe stupid people — and the emotionally disturbed — are just more likely to post their opinions at the end of a news story. It would be comforting to think so. Otherwise, we’re in deep shit.

Have you been holding this sentiment for a while, or was there a particular article with bad comments that brought this to mind?

Generally I find open comments lures trolls like crumbs draw vermin.

You really want to feel bad, you should check out Youtube comments.

Honestly though, I think that people behave differently online than they would in a face to face social setting. Anonymity is a powerful thing for people with despicable views.

Probably so. I’ve certainly noticed some of my relatives interrupt their own arguments when they remembered there was a gay guy in the room. I don’t imagine they’d restrain themselves so much online.
